My Love Letter to the Dead: The Haunted Hearts Series Spotlight
Every so often you’ll find a book or a series that will throw you into an obsession, whether it’s because you loved a character or because the book made you stay up until 4 am finishing it, and you can’t function properly afterward. I’ve had several of these life altering moments occur, but the biggest one this year happened to be the Haunted Hearts series by Alexia Onyx.
The Haunted Hearts series will have three books, two have been published already. Come Out, Come Out and Warmer, Colder can both be found on KU, with Light as a Feather slated to release next year. Each of these books follows a new couple and the series has amazing queer rep, mental health rep, and plus size rep.
This series will always hold a special place in my heart and one of the three specific reasons is the mental health representation. I don’t think I’ve read any series with the representation quite as raw as it is in this series. Each character is brought to live through their own battles with mental health, some winning and some losing, but every emotion is real enough to feel it through the pages. Seeing this kind of representation in media is something I wish we saw more of. It’s ok to not be ok.
Another reason this series means so much to me is that the characters are just so complex. It’s advertised that Come Out, Come Out, gives Tate and Violet vibes from AHS and that is a very accurate description. The way Aiden and Skye interact is flawlessly executed to give off those vibes, but still keeps that aura of mystery. Becca and Stasi from Warmer, Colder, couldn’t be more different. The dynamic these two present is so hot and cold that it keeps you hanging on for more every second of the book. Each of these characters has their own unique flaws and insecurities, as well as their own strengths. I’ve genuinely loved being in the headspace of each one.
The biggest reason that this series is ingrained in my soul is the fat representation. Both Skye and Stasi are confident in their bodies and their power. As a plus sized person, seeing that kind of representation is so important to me. I get tired of seeing characters lose weight to please others or feel so insecure in themselves. I feel enough of that in my real life and I aspire to be better. These characters help me feel that way. It’s so empowering seeing multi-faceted characters you can relate to and we need more of this in the dark romance world.
This series not only has a lot of representation and emotion, but the writing is done so beautifully. My ebook copies of these books have so many highlights because Alexia’s way with the prose is done so stunningly. It truly enraptures you and brings the words to life. I’ve read very few that have affected me the same way.
While I know every series means different things to different people, I hope that you’ll give this one a go if you haven’t. Mind your triggers as it deals with heavy subject matter often, but it’s truly a gem in the dark romance community. Why shouldn’t the dead get a HEA too?
